Suffering career confusion and loss of identity at age thirty-five, I resigned my research position at Massachusetts General Hospital, bought a bicycle, and -- with no cycling experience -- pedaled it 18,000 miles around the United States (map below the cover image). The goal of Biking for Birds, a first-of-its-kind eco-adventure, was to find 600 species of birds without using petroleum, but the book is more about my experience on the open road and how my transcontinental odyssey helped me understand the alcoholism and drug abuse which preceded my departure. If that sounds cool, you can read more about and buy the book here.
Pedaled every inch - 17,830 miles!
